Immigration Lawyer Gail Seeram weighs in on the politically correct term to use when describing an immigrant without legal status in the United States – “illegal immigrant” or “undocumented immigrant”.  This debate has been ongoing among immigration lawyer, media and latino.  In the presidential candidate debate between Obama and Romney – Obama used the term “undocumented” and Romney used the term “illegal”.  We all know who won the presidential election – Obama.  Immigration Lawyer Gail Seeram explains that immigrants view the term “illegal immigrant” as lumping them in a category with convicted criminal when the only crime they have committed is a civil violation.  As immigration lawyer and media outlets like CNN, ABC, and NBC try to reach the immigrant population – they have opted to use the term “undocumented immigrant”.  Any immigration lawyer can agree that the term “undocumented immigrant” is more descriptive of the immigrant status and has a softer connotation.
